Sir Brian Roche appointed Public Service Commissioner
Former Crown Treaty negotiator Sir Brian Roche has been appointed as the next Public Service Commissioner.
Sir Brian was the Crown negotiator for the first two treaty settlements: Tainui-Waikato in 1995 and Ngāi Tahu in 1997.
More recently, he chaired the government’s Cyclone Recovery Taskforce and served as the chair of the COVID-19 Independent Continuous Review, Improvement, and Advice Group.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says Sir Brian is more than experienced for the role.
“Sir Brian has built the trust and confidence of ministers across successive governments. He is authentic, he is honest, and he has a deep understanding of the public service and its functions. He understands how to manage problems, develop talent, and, importantly, drive performance,” says Luxon.
The Public Service Commissioner leads and oversees the performance and delivery of the public service and appoints public service Chief Executives.
His appointment is for two and a half years and begins in November.
