Wahine Māori aims for historic Entrust role
Papakura Marae Community Advocate Jonann McLeod is vying to become the first Māori Trustee on Entrust.
Entrust sets and distributes dividends from power lines company Vector, valued at $3.75 billion.
Vector, in turn, gets its revenue from people paying their power bills.
McLeod, says many of our whānau are in power poverty, and Entrust needs to be more innovative in its investments to ease the pressure.
“So one in five households last year struggled to pay the bills, so incurred fees and fines. With our Māori and Pasifika whānau, they are overrepresented when it comes to energy hardship and power poverty. And so this is an opportunity for whanau to say, `Actually, you know what? We want different. We want better,” says McLeod.
Jonann McLeod says solar power is a kaupapa that should be explored, not just because of cost savings to whānau but for long-term sustainability and security.
