Hope Tupara on new Arikinui’s welcome to MWWL
Te Rōpū Wāhine Māori Toko i te Ora president Hope Tupara says the recent conference allowed Te Arikinui Kuini Ngawai hono i te po Pootatau Te Wherowhero VIII to connect with the league.
Last week, the Māori Women’s Welfare League held their annual conference, with Waikato hosting at Tūrangawaewae and Mystery Creek.
Tupara says the kaitahi after the pōwhiri in Kimiora was the league’s first interaction with the new Arikinui, who was accompanied by her mother MWWL patron, Te Atawhai.
“Mihi to them both and to the Kaahui Ariki for the passing of Kiingi Tuheitia, and really to acknowledge his contribution to all of us, for his bringing together of all of our people and mobilizing us,” she says.
Hope Tupara says she has one more year left as president, with next year being the Māori Women’s Welfare League election.
