Te Tiriti inspires Aotearoa education, not dampen it
An education union president says Te Tiriti is an inspiration for creating a uniquely Aotearoa education system.
Last week, NZEI Te Riu Roa, one of Aotearoa’s longest-running unions, held their annual Hui-ā-Tau in Rotorua.
A key topic was a proposed change by the Government to section 127 of the Education and Training Act, prioritizing equitable outcomes for Māori students ahead of obligations to Te Tiriti.
Berhampore School principal Mark Porter says teachers aspire to fulfil the promise of Te Tiriti, reflecting the vision of tūpuna who worked on and signed it.
“So downgrading it for primary school boards is just another way in which this National-led coalition is trying to erode and reduce the impact of Te Tiriti in our country. That’s not a good place for us as a modern nation,” says Mr Porter.
