Mea Motu’s victory is a westside story says Tamihere
Waipareira Trust chief executive John Tamihere says Mea Motu’s success is a testament to the grit and determination of West Auckland.
Over the weekend, Motu won by forfeit after three rounds against Shannon O’Connell, just two weeks before her shot at the IBF and WBO super bantamweight titles in England.
Mr Tamihere, whose trust sponsors Motu, says she is part of a long tradition of West Auckland sporting success stories supported by the trust.
Motu was “baptized by fire” and has become a shining light in their community.
“She’s just out the gate in terms of knowing that what pulled her through is her Māoritanga, wairuatanga, you know, and so she’s very supportive of that. Her kids go to Hoani Waititi, so anyone doing good out west here, we’re obliged to sponsor, particularly when they break into that level of any code,” says Mr Tamihere.
