Education Ministry’s property division sacked
The Ministry of Education’s property division has been sacked following complaints of budget blowouts and poor delivery by the Ministry of Education’s school property department.
In April, Education Minister Erica Stanford initiated an inquiry into school construction, led by former National Party Minister Murray McCully.
In response to the findings, the Government directed the Ministry to buy pre-fabricated buildings to accelerate school delivery.
“They provided a report that, frankly, we expected, but in many cases, was a lot worse than we thought. So we put direction to the ministry that they needed to use more of these off-site manufactured bills and repeatable designs to get better value for money so that we could deliver more classrooms to more schools,” says Minister Stanford.
The recent report recommended creating a new entity separate from the Ministry to manage the school property portfolio.
