No future for Māori housing plans
Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka has refused to give any assurances of continued funding for Māori organisations to build homes.
Under the previous government, the Ministry for Housing and Urban Development and Kainga Ora worked with organisations in Taranaki, Tairāwhiti, Ngāti Kahungunu and Te Taitokerau to build new homes, repair existing ones and lay down infrastructure for papakainga.
In response to a question from Waatea Digital, Mr Potaka would only say he expected the organisations to deliver on their existing contracts.
Te Tai Tokerau MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi says the prototype has proved successful and merits ongoing funding.
“You can’t take $40 million and then suddenly at the flip of some conversation, he thinks we should trust because he has decided to change his mind – on what basis? So can’t be trusted, shouldn’t be trusted,” she says.
