Teams and officials gathered at the Bowl of Brooklands in Pukekura Park, New Plymouth on Friday to hear who would be judging the best kapa haka in the country,
Qualifying rounds start on February 25 with the finals on Saturday, March 1.
Te Matatini chair Sir Herewini Parata drew on the message of the late Kiingi Tuheiti in encouraging the teams to be themselves, look after each and pass on what they have learned.
“Every Matatini is a forum to pass on knowledge, pass on experiences so the next generation has something to pass to the next generation,” he says.
