Māori television statute relic of past
Whakaata Māori chief executive Shane Taurima is calling for a change in the Māori television legislation.
He told parliament’s Māori affairs select committee yesterday that the Māori Television Service Act 2003 – Te Aratuku Whakaata Irirangi Māori – is no longer fit for purpose.
The act says the channel’s core function was to provide a high-quality television service in both languages.
“There’s no reference to digital or any emerging or new platform technology for us to focus on and the other challenge is we are not funded to deliver to digital platforms as well, so that is a conflated challenge we currently face,” Mr Taurima said.
Te Māngai Pāho told the same select committee it intends to stop funding for linear television in the foreseeable future.
The act is currently under review.
