It’s Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, and Auckland Council has an ambitious programme to heighten awareness and use of the language across the super city.

Māori outcomes manager Nicholas Turoa says that includes an exhibition at the Central Library on the history of efforts to retain te reo Māori,

There are also projects to increase the use of te reo by staff and to increase its visibility in the community.

“We’ve been focused on a programme called Te Kete Kukuruku which is about providing stories and returning traditional names as well as in some instances some new names to different parks and spaces around to let people some of the significance of some of the whenua and some of the stories that are connected to mana whenua,” Mr Turoa says.

There’s also an ongoing project to make signs bilingual where appropriate.
