Quick action needed to keep Wairoa floods at bay
Ikaroa Rāwhiti MP Cushlar Tangaere-Manuel says a rapid review into the June Wairoa flood response doesn’t tell locals anything they didn’t already know.
The independent review panel led by former police commissioner Mike Bush recommended Hawke’s Bay Regional Council work more closely with Wairoa District Council and the community to manage the Wairoa River bar.
Ms Tangaere-Manuel welcomed its call for more acknowledgement and use of local knowledge.
“If the locals are given more powers to manage the bar themselves they should be okay because one of the things the report highlighted is the timeliness of action,” she says.
Ms Tangaere-Manuel says the report acknowledges that flooding is a persistent and long-standing problem for the northern Hawke’s Bay town.
