Ruapehu iwi Ngāti Rangi says it’s bitterly disappointed the closure of the Winstone paper mill and sawmill is going ahead with the loss of more than 200 jobs.
Chair Whetu Moataane says over the past 22 days the community have drawn together in an effort to keep the mills operating,
The company blamed high energy costs, and the impending closure sparked a political debate over energy reforms which have led to high profits and under-investment in new generation by the partially privatised power companies.
