Kapa haka bringing hapu back to whenua
Manaaki Whenua-Landcare researchers have been looking at how kapa haka can unite and transform rural communities.
It’s produced a case study as a YouTube video Te Kapa o Te Reureu: Keeping the Home Fires Burning about the way the people of Te Reureu valley alongside the Rangitikei River have used marae-based waiata and kapahaka practices.
Hapu member Taruke Karatea says the project has brought whānau back to the valley, allowing for the revitalisation of their tikanga.
0:13Kapahaka has definitely become a vehicle that we have utilised to respond to disconnection, to severed ties when it comes to people’s ability to participate on their whenua, or to even see their whenua, um and their marae.
Taruke Karatea says over generations the valley’s three major iwi – Raukawa, Tuwharetoa, and Maniapoto – have become one – and the aim now is for all to progress together.
