US election could have upside for NZ
A public policy expert who holds dual US and New Zealand citizenship says this country should be well-placed whoever wins November’s presidential election.
University of Auckland senior lecturer Tim Fadgen says the election is still close to call, with Democratic Party nominee Kamala Harris closing the gap with former president Donal Trump in state and national polls, with a boost expected from by a strong performance at last week’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
He says both parties are pushing anti-China sentiments and also stressing the importance of good relations with Pacific nations.
“Both parties are keen to have deep connections with allies in the region so based on circumstances outside of New Zealand, New Zealand is in a relatively strong position to navigate its future,” he says.
Dr Fadgen says the Democratic Convention promoted a more youthful and energetic party with an optimistic and forward-looking vision.
