Justice reform advocate Sir Kim Workman has welcomed a Police commitment to addressing some of the reasons for Māori overrepresentation in jail.
Sir Kim was part of the independent of community advocates and academics who qworked with frontline police to put together the Understanding Policing Delivery report released last week,,
He says through the three-year process the officers showed they were open to addressing bias and changing culture.
“I believe the culture of the police, especially with a lot of our younger police officers coming through, there are some really stunning people there and they join because they want to make a difference to people’s lives so there is a culture developing of transformational shift to saying ‘what can we do better,’” Sir Kim says.
Police say it has started implementing the first eight of the report’s 40 recommendations.
