King’s speaker triggers Peters with Koroneihana rebuke
The presence of one of his former MPs on the taumata at Turangawaewae for the Koroheihana hui has upset New Zealand First leader Winston Peters.
Monday’s welcome for Government and Opposition MPs was kicked of by Tukoroirangi Morgan, a former member of New Zealand First’s tight five Maori MPs who now chairs Waikato Tainui’s Te Arataura executive.
Mr Morgan said the coalition Government had taken a wrecking ball to Maori policy, Maori achievement and 50 years of iwi relationships with the crown.
Mr Peters says he claims to speak for Maori but be couldn’t get the votes on his own.
“He talked about us throwing Maoridom under the bus. This is an utter deceit, it’s a lie, it’s not true and everyone knows there are more Maori in cabinet than ever before, the top three in cabinet, two are Maori,” he says.
Mr Peters says the speeches by Opposotion MPs to the hui also demeaned the Kingitanga by dragging the Maori king into the poltical sphere.
