Paddlers from Aotearoa have been raking in the silver and gold at the waka ama world sprint championships in Hilo Bay, Hawaii.
Waka Ama New Zealand chief executive Lara Collins says with nealy 600 kai hoe competing, this country is making a big splash.
The weekend was devoted to elite paddlers, with the New Zealand women taking firsts in the 500 metre V-6 and V-12 and silver in the 500 metre turns race.
“Our men got silver in all of their events, junior boys’ silver, the junior girls silver. It’s been a battle on the water between New Zeaaland and Tahiti so far,” Ms Collins says.
After a hard day’s racing, people have been practicing their haka and waiata to share at tonight’s cultural evening.
