Green MP Huhana Lyndon sees a bright future for Te Tai Tokerau after this week’s Ngā Manu Kōrero regional competition at Northland College in Kaikohe.
Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Rangi Āniwaniwa won three sections – junior Maori to Hineteaio Chapman, junior English to Pou Ariki Hemara and senior Maori to Elite Reti, with Tuhingaia Manihera from Whāngarei Girls High School taking the senior English title.
Mikara Ngatau, also from Whāngarei Girls High School, won the Tā Himi Henare bilingual section, which is unique to the region.
Ms Lyndon says speakers were confident and articulate.
“They’re political, our young people. They’re outlining the things they are seeing and calling it out so we can’t think it’s adults putting it in their mouths. They are very clear as to what they are seeing and how thew=y challenges this Government and our leadership generally to stand up for te iwi Maori,” she says.
The 2024 Ngā Manu Kōrero national competition will be held at Auckland’s Spark Arena from September 9 to 11.
