A member of the Royal Commission on Abuse in Care’s Disability Reference Group is calling for all its recommendations to be implemented.
University of Otago Professor Tristram Ingram, and authority on Māori health, says the inquiry did everything it could not to further aggravate the trauma morehu have gone through.
It ran a co-design process involving both expert advisory committees and survivor panels.
“Which is why I firmly believe the Crown and the faith-based institutions must accept every single one of these recommendations. To not do so would be to put themselves in a position of thinking they know more than the survivors and the commission, who spent years working out and carefully crafting in the co-design,” Professor Ingram says.
He says there should be no place for paternalism in a situation where the crown, which effectively perpetrated the abuse, is required to respond.
