Marae backstop in cost of living crisis
The chief executive of South Auckland’s Papakura marae says the ongoing cost of living crisis is stretching its social services to the limit.
Tony Kake says he’s seeing a lot of working poor families struggling every day to make ends meet.
The marae tries to help where it can, but the problem is too big for communities to cope with on their own.
“We continue to ask the government to fundamentally make sure that people in Aotearoa-New Zealand get the basics – which are warm, dry roof over their heads and kai on the table,” Mr Kake says.
Papakura Marae’s medical centre now has enough staff it can reopen its books in mid-August to take more patients.
