The buyout period for homes affected by last year’s Anniversary weekend floods in Māngere ends in September, and the manager of Auckland Council’s recovery office is calling for more whānau to register.
Mace Ward says the council is trying to mitigate the risk to houses by increasing the capacity of Te Ararata and Harania catchments in the Favona/Walmsley Road area.
But about a third of the 1800 homes registered so far are eligible for the buy-out because there is no financially viable way to stop them being flooded again.
“Often people’s most important asset they have is to ensure that they’re protecting their family’s lives and their family’s safety in the home they live in so it’s so important to encourage people to register for the scheme if they have been impacted,” Mr Ward says.
The flood resilience project is expected to cost about $58 million.
