Chance for gamers in taniwha-dragon space
A group which encourages business relationships with China believes there is huge potential in the Māori game development and digital storytelling sectors.
Asia New Zealand Foundation kaitohutohu Ronnie Thompson is taking a delegation of 10 leaders of Maori businesses to China next week to look at the country’s booming digital and business sector.
She says the global gaming industry is estimated to be worth $450 billion a year and is growing at 9 percent a year – and the growth is even faster in the Asia Pacific region.
She sees potential in the dragon-taniwha relationship.
“There’s lots of opportunity here, We do want to explore Maori-Chinese culturally-centered approaches to business development, There’s a lot of what we can do but there’s also the how with respectfully building whanaungatanga and that concept of reciprocity,” Ms Thompson says.
The trip follows one to South East Asia earlier in the year for is Maori organisations in the food and beverage sector, and comes out of foundation research that Maori in general have a positive attitude towards China but they felt they weren’t getting enough business opportunities.
