Forest & Bird chief executive Nicola Toki says the Government’s climate strategy lays bare its lack of commitment to meaningful change.

Climate Change Minister Simon Watts yesterday released the strategy including five key pillars:

resilient infrastructure;

credible carbon markets;

abundant and affordable clean energy;

world-leading climate innovation; and

nature-based solutions.

Ms Toki says there’s no detail on implementation and no commitment by the Government to take the lead.

“So there’s no funding mentioned in the three page document, quick read, there’s no firm goals, no timetable, no mention of managed retreat from coastal impacts for those vulnerable communities which are often Maori communities as we have seen with Te Tairawhiti for example,” she says.
