Political commentator Shane Te Pou believes the election of a Labour Government in Britain will be good for New Zealand.

Sir Keir Starmer led his party to a landslide victory over Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives, who have been in power for 14 years.

Labour will now look to theft the country out of the economic doledrums – and the free trade agreement with New Zealand, which includes a Maori chapter, could get a fresh start.

“Basically what they di is they imposed economic sanctions on themselves (through Brexit) and trade sanctions on themselves and that’s fundamentally why their economy is in such a bad shape but I think the relationship with the UK and New Zealand is better off with this change of governemnt as they try to refresh policies as they try to align with traditional partners like New Zealand,” Mr Te Pou says.

Talks on a free trade agreement between the UK and Canada, which broke down in January over cheese, look set top reopen.
