Today, we’re delving into a critical and sensitive issue: the alarming rates of suicide within Māori communities.

Recent statistics reveal that Māori are disproportionately affected by suicide, with rates significantly higher at 15.8 per 100,000 people compared to the general population’s 10.6 per 100,000.

This stark reality underscores the urgent need for effective prevention strategies and culturally responsive support systems.

To shed light on this pressing issue, we’re speaking with Kirsty Maxwell-Crawford about the programs that are making a difference in our hāpori and how each of us can contribute to these efforts.

Additionally, we’ll hear from Berea Morrison and Quack Pirihi, two young individuals who fundraised their way to attend the 2024 World Indigenous Suicide Prevention Conference. They will share what hope to learn there and bring back to their communities.

This Taikaha episode contains discussions about suicide and suicidal themes that may be distressing to some listeners. If you or someone you know is struggling, please seek professional support or contact a crisis helpline listed below. Listener discretion is advised.
