Charter schools way to break public education
Horahora school Principal Pat Newman says the $153 million for charter schools in the Budget is about politics, not education.
He says it’s about privatisation and undermining the teacher unions rather than improving the quality of education.
“If we’re talking about being able to work for the needs of the kids in the school, then every school in the country should be able to do that. If we’re saying you don’t need any training to be a teacher and you can work in a charter school and we can pay you, then you start to wonder why we are having charter schools and why they are being introduced. It is nothing to do with education. It’s about breaking the current system,” Mr Newman says.
Pat Newman says all schools have charters, including a commitment to serve their community.
