Web talk brings Indigenous women together
The organiser of this week’s online forum for Indigenous wahine from across the Pacific says it generated a valuable sense of whanaungatanga.
Hema Wihongi says more than 1000 women connected in to discuss challenges including climate change, food security, housing, health and economic development.
Ms Wihongi, the daughter of the late WAI262 native flora and fauna claimant Del Wihongi. says there was also concern about increasing attacks on Indigenous rights.
“It’s not necessary that we’ll have the answers to these things. But as long as we keep the korero going, and eventually you talk about things enough that solutions come up,” she says.
Hema Wihongi says the online forum was a prelude to next month’s Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture in Hawai’i where she expects many similar issues will be raised.
