Youth centre shelter from the storm
A youth leader mentor at a new Auckland youth emergency centre says it will draw on the lived experience of volunteers and staff to help those doing it tough on the streets.
The Front Door on Karangahape Rd will offer legal advice, healthcare, Ministry of Social Development-support, budgeting advice and housing support.
It’s the vision of Aaron Hendry from youth development roopu Kick Back.
22-year-old Te Kahukoka-Rose Harawira Yelash says she met Mr Hendry five years ago and he helped her deal with mental and physical trauma, addictions, and even suicide.
“That is what the rangatahi are looking for … people that will stand with them through the storm. People that will help amplify their voices. People that aren’t all about fame, and rich, and all that. Someone that’s rich in heart – and that’s what Aaron is,” she says.
Kick Back expects the Front Door will cater in large part to rangatahi Māori – but it will be there for any youth in need, especially the homeless..
