MUMA takes on housing challenge
A housing support service says the biggest factor in South Auckland housing crisis is the lack of affordable housing.
Its estimated more than 8,000 people in South Auckland whānau are sharing homes or flats, living in emergency motels, garages or sleeping in their cars.
Mia Tepania of Manukau Urban Maori Authority’s Housing Navigation Service, says the problem can be overwhelming.
“Right now we have thousands of families in emergency housing, to the point where vacancies are far and few. I think the good thing is that the Housing Navigation Service has been rolled out across the board, and we’ve got a lot of people trying to work to address, these current issues within emergency housing,” she says.
Ms Tepania there is an urgent need for government to provide more social housing.
