Māori nursing work from the heart
The Māori nurses council Te Kaunihera o Nga Nēhi Māori o Aotearoa hopes a national hui for student nurses will help address the high attrition rate of young nurses and build strength through unity.
The hui stated this morning at the Manukau Institute of Technology’s Otara campus, with support from AUT, the University of Auckland and Unitec.
Council president Jo Marino says many Maori enter the profession because of their own whanau interactions with the health system, rather than for the money.
“It’s mahi ngakau, it’s one from the heart and it’s just a beauiful mahi where we want to improve the health outcomes for our people,” she says.
The hui runs all week.
