Ngāti Tarawhai Iwi Trust says it’s dipping into its own reserves to keep biosecurity measures in place for Lake Okataina.
Government funding to help stop the spread of the freshwater gold clam finished last month.
Trust chair Cyrus Hingston says access restrictions to the lake are still needed because only two in five boaties in the Rotorua lakes area are doing self-compliance checks.
Until April 29 the trust is allowing boat access to Okataina for four days a week, Friday to Monday from 6am to 8pm for boats that meet the check-clean-dry method of controlling freshwater pest species.
During May and June the lake will only open Friday to Sunday.
