Highway 35 insignificant for National planners
Te Ikaroa-Rāwhiti MP Cushla Tangaere-Manuel says her constituents along Highway 35 are being shafted by National.
The iconic road around the East Coast is not included in the Government’s roads of national significance, despite its vulnerability to severe weather events.
Transport Minister Simeon Brown’s 15 priority roading projects including upgrade the Brynderwyn road, an expressways from Warkworth to Wellsford, the East-West link in Auckland, a Hawke’s Bay expressway, and a a second Mt Victoria Tunnel.
Ms Tangaere-Manuel says Te Tai Rāwhiti is being pushed to the side despite the contribution it makes to the economy.
“It was quite clear to me in the house when they’re standing up and doing the patsy questions about roads here, there and everywhere, which frankly, Labour started and not a single, not once since I’ve been the MP have I heard State Highway 35 mentioned, Well, I’ll be mentioning it,” she says.
