Ocean salmon farm gets sign off
Oceans and Fisheries Minister Shane Jones says approval for New Zealand King Salmon’s Blue Endeavour open ocean aquaculture project is a significant step for the sector.
The company intends to shift some of its farms from inside the Marlborough sounds to the open sea to the north where water temperatures are cooler.
It expects to produce 10,000 tonnes of harvested salmon a year, with annual export revenue of up to $300 million.
Mr Jones says it will provide more jobs for the Marlborough region and benefit the economy by providing sustainable kaimoana to the world.
He says the five years it took to get through the consent process is too long, and the coalition Government is committed to removing unnecessary barriers to make approval processes for such projects quicker, easier and cheaper.
