Trauma stories help develop justice programme
Auckland University of Technology and the Borrin Foundation are working with Hoani Waititi Marae to develop a framework to improve outcomes for whanau in the criminal justice system with mental distress or addictions.
Shane White, a member of the co-design roopu, says He Ture Kia Tika is in response to last year’s report recommending government develop a trauma-informed justice system that includes collaborations with a diverse network of community-based resources.
He says a launch this afternoon at the marae will acknowledge whānau who’ve told their stories in the hope can spark systemic change.”Because it’s important that people that contributed from themselves see acknowledgement of that. We can’t talk about trauma-informed research if we don’t acknowledge the people that have dug into their trauma and shared that with the world,” he says
