Kapa-Kingi makes history as first wahine MP for Te Tai Tokerau
Māori Party MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi has told parliament her footsteps there followed the tracks of her tūpuna.
In her maiden speech, the new Te Tai Tokerau electorate gave a tribute to Eparaima Te Mutu Kapa from Te Aupouri, who held the Northern Māori seat from 1891 to 1893 and was a vocal supporter of giving women the vote.
“Here I stand, part of the 54th iteration of a New Zealand government as a mokopuna of Eparaima Kapa, member of the 11th New Zealand government, as well as Māori Parliament over 130 years ago. He advocated for the rights of women, and here I am as the first wahine to take the Tai Tokerau seat,” Ms Kapa-Kingi said.
