Government neglect fueling alcohol harm
Health Coalition Aotearoa co-chair Lisa Te Morenga says government has stood by while the liquor industry has promoted drinking by women.
Wellington mayor Tory Whānau has admitted she has a drinking problem after a series of public incidents and she’s seeking professional help.
Ms Te Morenga says she’s not alone, with one in five New Zealanders having unhealthy drinking habits.
Industry marketing, a lack of regulation on marketing and sale and the lack of opportunities for communities to have a say on liquor outlets contribute to the problem
“There’s actually very little we can do as a community to say, hey, we don’t want that shop in our neighborhood, hey, stop putting it up in front of our kids, and every place that they live. So we really need to, you know, have a lot more say, government needs to honour its treaty obligations here and let our communities have a say in how alcohol is regulated in New Zealand,” she says
