Zero tolerance promise for hospital ED attacks

Download AudioNational’s health spokesperson Shane Reti says if he gets the portfolio he will have zero tolerance for people who attack emergency department staff.
The Association of Salaried Medical Specialists has asked for security at Auckland’s North Shore and Waitakere hospitals to be stepped up.
Dr Reti says he’s concerned of reports of threats, dangerous behaviour and even assaults.
“A completely and totally zero tolerance for that. We need to figure that through and there will be a tail of things. At one end of course it is reducing those wait times so people are not as frustrated as they are with prolonged wait times in ED and a large part of that will come down to health workforce, it will come down to primary care solutions and it may well be that at the front door we may need to be looking at doing more,” he says.
