Poor missing in congestion charge planning

Auckland councillor Josephine Bartley has slammed proposed congestion charges around the city.
The Maungakiekie-Tamaki ward representative says Auckland Transport and council officers are on working on ways it can be introduced.
She says no one has asked how it will affect poor Māori and Pacific Island communities – even though the experience of other cities show they will be worst hit.
“It seems like there’s some desperation and urgency given the Government is saying – or the new Government, once it’s in – is saying it’s going to get rid of the regional fuel tax, so then we are going to need money coming from somewhere to fund these transport projects the city needs,” Cr Bartley says.
Josephine Bartley says when there aren’t adequate public transport options, congestion charges hit poor people who need to drive to get to work.
