Nelson electoral recount starts

The District Court has received applications to recount the votes in three electorates – Mount Albert, Nelson and Tamaki Makaurau.
The recount in Nelson started this morning, with each candidate entitled to have one scrutineer observe the process.
Labour’s Rachel Boyack won the seat on special votes with a majority of 29, after losing on election night to National’s Blair Cameron by 59 votes.
Recounts of the other two seats will start in Auckland at 9am on Monday.
Helen White held Mr Albert for Labour by just 20 votes over National’s Melissa Lee, after Jacinda Ardern’s 21,246 vote majority was reduced to 186 on election night.
In Tamaki Makaurau, Peeni Henare’s election vote margin of 495 flipped to 4 votes behind Te Pati Maori’s Takutai Tarsh Kemp.
If a recount finds the public declaration was incorrect, the judge will order the Electoral Commission to give an amended declaration.
