Government in caretaker mode as coalition talks start
The Chris Hipkins-led Labour Government is likely to remain in a caretaker role at least until the end of November.
There can be no change of Government until after counting of special votes finishes on November 3, and proceedings could also be delayed by the Port Waikato by-election on November 25.
Coalitions talks between National, ACT and potentially New Zealand First hinge on what happens in the marginal seats, especially Te Atatū, New Lynn, Banks Pennisula and Nelson which could all go back into the Labour column.
Te Pāti Māori is also hoping special votes will deliver it either another electorate seat or enough party votes to bring Meka Whaitiri back in on the list.
In the meanwhile Chris Hipkins and his cabinet will be preparing the books, shifting offices and farewelling staff for a smooth handover to National and its coalition partners.
