Meth problem out of cage
Anti-methamphetamine campaigner Denis O’Reilly is warning of a flood of drugs hitting the country.
He says his Hawke’s Bay community is looking at how it can build up resilience to physical flooding as it cleans up afer Cyclone Gabrielle – but it also needs to build up another sort of resilience.
He says seizures at the border increased 4000 percent this calendar year.
“You might say ‘Customs are doing a good job if that’s the case,’ but the sad truth is they only intercept a fraction – generally about 20 to 30 percent of the stuff that’s coming through.. So we’ve got a problem we thought we’d got back in its cage to some degree – it’s coming at us,” Mr O’Reilly says.
Denis O’Reilly says there have also been problems in the Hawke’s Bay with a substance claiming to be MDMA, which has put at least four people into hospital.
