Whanau ready for HPV self testing

Lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic are being applied to keeping whanau safe from the human papillomavirus and cervical cancer.
An awareness campaign about new HPV self testing kits was launched at Kokiri Marae in Wellington yesterday.
Selah Hart, Te Aka Whai Ora’s deputy chief executive for public health, says event emcee Marcia Hopa compared the new kits to rapid antigen tests.
“We’ve had two or three years of having to frequently screen ourselves for a communicable disease, actually, this is now applying that same logic, giving people the power to actually test themselves and make sure that they are kept healthy and well,” she says.
Ms Hart says these new tests give all whānau the opportunity to detect the HPV virus more quickly so they can take steps to prevent ending up with cervical cancer.
