Mutual respect marks Ikaroa Rawhiti race
Labour’s Ikaroa Rawhiti candidate says the election could deliver two strong wahine voices for the electorate.
Cushla Tangaere-Manuel was brought in a short notice to try to retain the seat for Labour after incumbent Meka Whaitiri defected to Te Pati Māori.
The pair faced off at the weekend in a televised debate that had none of the confrontation of similar debates in mainstream politics.
Ms Tangaere-Manuel told Radio Waatea host Dale Husband it’s not her style to belittle other Māori.
There’s a lot of values we agree with and one of my messages is I don’t see the Maori party of be our opposition. We need a Labour Government. So it’s just mutual respect plus our people are smart and they realise they’ve got an opportunity to have another strong voice at the table with Meka being so high on the list and me being a candidate,” she says.
