National would meet doctors’ demands says Reti

National’s health spokesperson Shane Reti says today’s strike by doctors and hospital dentists wouldn’t have happened if National had been Government because there would have been money available to pay them what they are asking.
Members of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists walked off the job for two hours from noon to push their demand for a pay increase that matches inflation.
Dr Reti says the specialists having the specialists go on strike for the first time ever is a damning indictment on the management of the health system by the Government before and after the health reforms.
“They have chosen to spend $486 million on health reforms, half a billion dollars. We believe that sort of money should go on front line rather than back office or ideological layers and layers of bureaucracy so the Government has made choices. They chose not to fund the front line. They chose to do health reforms instead,” he says.
