Fashion catwalk a cakewalk for kaiako

A kaiako at a Taitokerau kura kaupapa says speaking on her marae is scarier than taking the stage at the New Zealand Fashion Week opening show.
Nekol Hura was the first model on the Auckland Viaduct Events Centre runway for Kiri Nathan’s spectacular presentation Te Kuneroa on the evolution of Māori clothing.
She says back home at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Hokianga the questions flew.
“Some of them were like ‘were you scared out there?’ and I was like ‘kia pono – I’m more scared about standing up before my kaumatua and kuia on my marae at Waiomio’ – that’s scarier for me because ‘ke te hiki o te mana o taku marae but going on the runway mua I nga pakeha, nah, kore te raru,” Ms Hura says.
She wanted to show her tauira in the Hokianga that te reo Māori and whakapapa can take you anywhere in the world.
