The whitebait season started today, and a noted authority on maramataka Māori says the run could start as early as tomorrow.
Rereata Makiha says there’s kōrero from the Hokianga whare wānanga about how the stars align.
“That’s a kārero about Puanga and Whakaahu Kerekere being on the eastern horizon at the same time and it’s said to be the time the whitebait up home will start to run,” he says.
He says the old Māori had different markers for spring than Pākeha – and according to the maramataka luna calendar it started a month ago.
