Hapū uses animation to share pūrākau

Kaikōura-based hapū Ngāti Kurī has produced four short animations to share some of its history with members.
Rocky Roberts, the chief storyteller for Christchurch-based Māori consultancy NAIA, says the hapū established itself in the area in the late 1600s, after moving down from Te Ika a Maui.
The animations feature abbreviated versions of ancient stories or pūrākau.
“So we’re lucky in Kaikōura, Ngāti Kuri, we have a lot of whakapapa, a lot of pūrākau, that’s been handed down – and we just wanted to wanted to share it with more of our whānau. So – that was the idea, just to make our pūrākau, our culture, more widely accessible,” he says.
An episode a week will be put up on the hekōrero.nz website over the next month.
