Seafood Conference navigates stormy waters
The chief executive of pan-Māori fishing company Moana New Zealand says the industry needs to celebrate the positive impact it has on the economy and on a multitude of small communities around the country.
Steve Tarrant is addressing the closing day of the annual Seafood Conference in Wellington today, and he says the future of the industry sits with Māori as the true custodians of Tangaroa.
He says it faces tough economic conditions and increasing challenges over fishing practices, which it is tackling head on.
Moana provides millions in annual earnings to iwi and hundreds of jobs, many in areas where there is little other work.
We are from the Far North right down to the deep south, right out to the Chathams. So you know we’ve got a footprint, and an influence that we have responsibility for – with a massive amount of coverage. So it’s about celebrating the support we give, the economic impact that we have, and the wider economic impact.
Steve Tarrant says the conference has been discussing the industry transformation plan now before Government, which encourages a collective approach to the future.
