Field clearing for kiwi movies
The Hollywood screenwriters’ strike, which has now lasted more than 100 days, could boost the prospects of three kiwi movies.
Taika Waititi’s American-Samoa-based soccer comedy Next Goal Wins, Lee Tamhori’s early settler film The Convert, and the 1981 Springbok-rugby tour film Uproar – starring Julian Dennison – are headed for screenings at next month’s Toronto film festival in Canada.
Māori filmmaker and New Zealand On Air funding advisor Heperi Mita, says last year’s Toronto festival was an important step for the Tuhoe raids film Muru after its premiere at the New Zealand International Film Festival.
“It then went on to the Toronto International film festival, and then went on to the movie theatres. And Muru made $1.5 million last year – which was the highest-earning New Zealand film of 2022. And that’s massive,” he says.
