Raukawa Tait wants local solutions to Rororua crime
Te Pāti Māori’s Rotorua candidate, Merepeka Raukawa Tait, says community safety needs to be put in the hands of local providers. especially Iwi and hapū groups.
The former Rotorua Lakes councillor and Women’s Refuge head launches her campaign this evening in Rotorua.
She says the community wants an end to the crime and disorder brought about by central government’s mishandling of emergency accommodation in the city.
“There is a reckoning coming and that is the funding going into government agencies in Rotorua should be redirected into the local providers who know their people know the issues and can get a foot in the door to decrease some of this behaviour,” she says.
The Police crime data map for Rotorua district shows an increase in assault, robbery and theft over the past year, with a slight decrease in burglaries.
Police say crime figures ramped up when people who had been in emergency accommodation at motels on Fenton St were moved into backpackers and hostels.
